Children at the Window
1922
Max Beckmann turns a simple view out a window into a psychological thriller in this 1922 print. Two children stand before a curtain-draped opening, staring out at a world that looks like it's made of jagged glass and dark secrets, with strange cone shapes looming outside. Created during the turbulent Weimar Republic era, the scratchy, anxious lines reflect Beckmann's signature Expressionist style. Beckmann, who suffered a nervous breakdown after serving as a medic in WWI, often used windows as a metaphor for the fragile barrier between the self and a chaotic outside world.
