Magic Mirror
1946
Max Beckmann created this haunting 'Magic Mirror' in 1946 while living in exile in the US, fleeing the Nazis. A tall, slender woman stands on a table gazing into a massive, tilted frame, representing vanity or the search for identity. But look under the table—it's a dark, crowded box of shadowy figures, almost like demons or trapped souls reaching up. This contrast is pure Expressionism: showing the ugly, chaotic truth hiding beneath a polite, elegant surface. The scratchy lines make the whole thing feel unstable, like the heavy mirror could crash down on the woman at any moment.
