Morgue is a haunting woodcut Max Beckmann created in 1915 while serving as a medical orderly during the horrors of World War I. The chaotic, jagged lines and distorted, huddled figures capture the sheer exhaustion and trauma of handling endless dead bodies, an experience that actually led to the artist's own mental breakdown. This raw, unflinching scene became a defining piece of German Expressionism, proving that art doesn't always have to be beautiful to be incredibly powerful.
