Resurrection, plate 12 from the portfolio ‘Faces’
1918
Max Beckmann created this chaotic scene of resurrection while recovering from a nervous breakdown caused by his service as a medical orderly in World War I. Instead of a peaceful rising from the dead, we see a frantic, tangled mess of distorted figures climbing out of coffins and boxes, screaming and struggling to escape. It’s a raw, Expressionist take on rebirth that feels more like a panic attack than a miracle, perfectly capturing the psychological trauma of a world turned upside down.
