Winter Landscape by Max Beckmann, 1920

Max Beckmann gives us a slightly dizzying tour of Frankfurt, where the entire city seems to warp and curve around a lone figure walking past a poster-covered kiosk. Created during the chaos of World War I, this Expressionist print swaps pretty winter scenery for jagged, leafless trees and heavy factory smoke puffing into the sky. The distorted perspective turns a simple street scene into something almost dreamlike, making you wonder if the 'Beautiful View' of the title is actually a bit of a sarcastic joke.
