Selbstporträt 2
1914
Max Beckmann stared into the mirror in 1914 and captured a face that looks like it's vibrating with anxiety. Created right at the outbreak of World War I, this scratchy, intense self-portrait shows the German Expressionist master using jagged lines to carve out his own features. He would soon serve as a medical orderly in the war, an experience that shattered his nerves and permanently darkened his art. This raw, unpolished sketch feels less like a vanity project and more like a psychological x-ray of a man on the edge of a historical abyss.
