Os Prisioneiros
1910
Max Beckmann crammed a dozen suffering, half-naked men into this claustrophobic, shadowy cell to show the raw, unfiltered reality of incarceration. Painted in 1910, the thick, aggressive brushstrokes make the prisoners' flesh look almost bruised and swollen, emphasizing their physical and psychological torment. As a pioneer of German Expressionism, Beckmann cared far more about capturing intense, raw emotions than getting anatomical proportions perfectly right. Looking closely at the huddled, bound figures and the man collapsed on the floor, you can almost feel the suffocating heat and despair radiating from the scene.
