Donna che piange
1914
Max Beckmann created this frantic, scratchy portrait in 1914, right as the world was plunging into the chaos of World War I. The central figure—a man in a wide hat with a hand pressed anxiously to his chin—stares out with a hollow, intense gaze, while a woman's face looms ghost-like beside him. This is Expressionism at its rawest: Beckmann isn't trying to make you see a pretty face, he's trying to make you feel the psychological tension and fear of the era. The jagged lines look almost like they were carved in a panic, reflecting the artist's own inner turmoil. It’s a snapshot of a mind on the edge, created just before Beckmann served as a medic in the war, an experience that would permanently darken his art.
