Max Slevogt transports us to the world of *One Thousand and One Nights* in this 1903 sketch for *Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves*. Two figures in turbans and robes occupy a doorway, their loose, gestural forms typical of the German Impressionist's energetic style. The standing figure looms over the seated man, while discarded sandals on the floor ground the exotic scene in everyday reality.
