Cloudy Mountains Handscroll - Main Painting
Mi Youren, the son of a legendary artist, created this dreamy landscape using a technique that feels surprisingly modern for the 12th century. Instead of sharp outlines, he used layers of wet, horizontal ink dots—now famous as 'Mi dots'—to build up the misty, rolling mountains of southern China. It feels less like a precise map and more like a hazy memory of a foggy morning. The numerous red seals stamped across the top reveal that emperors and collectors have been obsessing over this scroll for centuries, essentially leaving their graffiti as proof of ownership.
