Macacos à beira de um riacho
c. 1796
Nagasawa Rosetsu, a bit of a rebel in the Japanese art world, captures two macaques perched precariously on a rocky outcrop above a stream. The larger monkey in the front looks off into the distance with a surprisingly human expression of concern, while its companion peeks out from behind. Rosetsu uses bold, wet ink washes for the grey rocks, contrasting them beautifully with delicate red foliage that suggests an autumn setting. Known for his eccentric personality and eventual expulsion from his master's school for being too unconventional, Rosetsu brings a playful, almost cartoonish energy to these primates that feels fresh even centuries later.
