Montagne e barche in lontananza
late 1700s
Nagasawa Rosetsu, an eccentric master of traditional Japanese painting in the late 1700s, created this striking vertical scroll that plays boldly with scale and emptiness. A massive, ink-drenched cliff face dominates the left side, looming over the viewer like a dark giant, while tiny, ghostly boats drift in the misty distance. This composition is a masterclass in negative space, where the vast empty area suggests a foggy river stretching far away into the horizon. Rosetsu was a student of the famous Maruyama Okyo but was known for his wild personality and spontaneous brushwork, which you can clearly see in the rough, textured strokes of the rock face compared to the delicate lines of the distant mountains.
