Nils Dardel’s 1918 masterpiece 'Konversation' is a whimsical slice of Swedish modernism that feels like a fever dream of high society. A towering, pale nude figure holding a fan dominates the center, seemingly addressing two fashionably dressed women on the left and a seated man feeding a bird below. Meanwhile, in the top right corner, tiny figures plummet from a skyscraper, adding a dash of dark humor to this otherwise elegant gathering. Painted just as the world was recovering from WWI, the piece captures a playful, almost naive energy that Dardel became famous for during his time in Paris.
