Cavallo alato

Odilon Redon

1894

Cavallo alato by Odilon Redon, 1894

Odilon Redon was a master of the 'noirs'—his mysterious black drawings and prints that look like dreams captured on paper. Here, a ghostly winged horse emerges from a heavy, ink-black abyss, looking almost like it's floating out of a nightmare into the light. Created during the height of the Symbolist movement, Redon wasn't interested in painting real life; he wanted to paint the invisible world of imagination. The contrast between the delicate, sketched lines of the horse and the dense, scratchy darkness below creates a feeling of magic rising from the unknown.
