花を持つ女性の横顔 by Odilon Redon, circa 1890

Odilon Redon was the master of the dream world, and this profile of a woman emerging from the shadows is a perfect example of his famous 'noirs.' She floats peacefully against a grainy, dark background, surrounded by ghostly flowers that seem to bloom directly out of the darkness. As a leading Symbolist, Redon wasn't interested in painting reality; he wanted to capture the invisible world of dreams and the subconscious. The soft, hazy lines make her look like a memory fading in and out of focus, inviting the viewer to guess what she is dreaming about.
