Autumn Ivy
after 1732
Ogata Kenzan, the younger brother of the famous Rinpa master Ogata Kōrin, brings autumn to life with these cascading ivy leaves. Notice how the deep, mossy greens of the larger leaves contrast beautifully with the vibrant, fiery reds of the smaller ones, all dangling from delicate, wispy vines. The loose, expressive calligraphy on the right isn't just decoration; it's a poem that dances with the plants, blending painting and poetry in a style he loved. Kenzan was actually a potter first, and you can almost see that ceramicist's eye for bold, simple shapes in how he painted these leaves.
