Two pigeons with falling ginkgo leaves
1900 - 1930
Watch closely as two pigeons engage in an aerial ballet amidst falling ginkgo leaves! Ohara Koson, a master of kacho-e (bird-and-flower prints), contrasts a beautifully patterned grey bird with a stark white companion against a moody, gradient sky. This piece belongs to the Shin-hanga movement, which revitalized traditional woodblock printing in the early 20th century. Interestingly, while Koson created over 500 designs, his work was actually much more popular in the West than in his home country of Japan during his lifetime!
