White heron on tree branch

Ohara Koson

1900 - 1910

White heron on tree branch by Ohara Koson, 1900 - 1910

Ohara Koson was the undisputed master of bird-and-flower prints, a key figure in the Shin-hanga movement that revitalized traditional Japanese woodblocks in the early 20th century. Notice how the egret is caught mid-movement, wings fully spread as it balances precariously on the curving willow branch, looking like it's about to dive for a snack. Koson actually spent years sketching birds in the wild to capture their anatomy and behavior so accurately, giving this piece a lifelike energy. The muted, misty background makes the stark white of the feathers pop, creating a serene moment frozen in time.
