A Girl Sitting in the Dunes and a Girl Lying Down (Two Girls in the Dunes, Sylt) by Otto Mueller, 1920-1924

Otto Mueller, a key member of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, found his muse in the wild dunes of the island Sylt. In this scene, two figures lounge amidst the grass, their bodies rendered in a warm, mustard yellow that makes them look like they are growing out of the earth itself. Mueller was obsessed with the unity of humans and nature, often simplifying forms into rhythmic, almost decorative shapes. The grainy texture reveals this as a lithograph, a medium he used to capture the raw, earthy feeling of his subjects without the fuss of realistic detail.
