Examples of Chinese ornament, Pl.05
1867
Owen Jones, a visionary 19th-century designer, created this plate to decode the mathematical harmony behind Chinese decorative patterns. The composition is divided into three horizontal bands, each bursting with swirling blue scrolls and stylized lotus flowers against a creamy backdrop, echoing the famous blue-and-white porcelain that fascinated the Victorian world. Although often associated with the Gothic Revival for his architectural work, Jones was a global design detective whose exhaustive catalogs helped launch the Arts and Crafts movement by teaching artists to learn from history's structural logic.
