Sacra Conversazione by Paolo Veronese, circa 1560-1570

Paolo Veronese was the ultimate master of showing off expensive fabrics, and he definitely flexed that skill here with the shimmering silk robes and heavy velvet drapes. In this 'Sacra Conversazione' (Holy Conversation), the Virgin Mary sits centrally, looking down as a kneeling saint in a gorgeous floral gown reaches out to touch the baby Jesus's foot. To the left, a bishop in bright red vestments holds a book, while an elderly bearded saint stands guard on the right, creating an intimate yet grand family gathering. Veronese's use of bold teal and crimson against the soft sky background makes the scene feel both divine and incredibly fashionable for 16th-century Venice.
