Mount Sainte-Victoire by Paul Cézanne, c. 1904

Paul Cézanne was absolutely obsessed with this mountain near his home in Provence, painting it over 60 times during the last two decades of his life! Here, he breaks the landscape down into geometric blocks of color, using cool blues and purples for the towering peak while contrasting it with the warm, earthy oranges of the foreground. Those chunky, visible brushstrokes weren't just a stylistic choice; they completely paved the way for Cubism, inspiring young artists like Picasso to see the world as a collection of shapes rather than realistic details.
