Napoleon Crossing the Alps

Napoleon Crossing the Alps by Paul Delaroche, 1850

Paul Delaroche decided to puncture the myth of the invincible Emperor with this chilly reality check from 1850. Instead of the heroic, rearing stallion seen in Jacques-Louis David's famous propaganda piece, we see a weary, bundled-up Napoleon shivering on a humble mule. A rugged mountain guide leads the way through the treacherous, snow-choked pass, emphasizing the grueling human effort behind the military legend. Painted decades after the actual event, this Academic masterpiece was a deliberate counter-narrative, stripping away the imperial glory to reveal the freezing, exhausting grit of the 1800 Alpine campaign.
