Demonic Night by Paul Klee, 1939

Created in 1939, just a year before his death, Paul Klee’s 'Demonic Night' is a swirling vortex of anxiety and abstraction. The composition is dominated by stormy blues and heavy, ink-like black blotches that look like bruised clouds or floating eyes. Thick, jagged lines cut through the darkness, reflecting the artist's declining health and the looming shadow of World War II. It’s a prime example of late Expressionism, where Klee moved away from his earlier whimsical style into something much darker and more urgent, almost as if he was racing against time to capture the chaos of the world.
