The Man in Love by Paul Klee, 1923

Paul Klee created this whimsical, dreamlike figure during his teaching years at the Bauhaus school, where he explored the intersection of art and music. The floating, mechanical-looking man is encased in a large circle, seemingly suspended in a grainy, starry void, with a tiny heart-shaped face hinting at his romantic state. Below him, delicate roots anchor the composition, making the lovestruck man resemble a strange, uprooted flower. Klee often treated his art like musical compositions, and here he visually plays with the feeling of being 'head over heels' or floating on air.
