Bomber Lair – Egg and Fin
1940
Paul Nash, a British surrealist and official war artist, created this dreamlike scene during the early days of World War II. The massive, textured shape in the center looks like a giant stone fin or the tail of a crashed bomber, looming over a strange, mushroom-like object. Through a doorway on the right, a tiny ship sails on a calm blue sea, offering a glimpse of peace amidst the heavy, shadowy hangar-like space. Nash often treated airplanes as living creatures, and here he transforms the machinery of war into a mysterious, almost prehistoric landscape.
