The City, Paris
1934
Paul Signac brings Paris to life with a dazzling explosion of color in this 1934 view of Notre Dame Cathedral. Instead of mixing paints on a palette, he applied thousands of tiny, distinct dots of pure color directly to the canvas—a technique called Pointillism. This method makes the swirling pink clouds and the golden cathedral seem to vibrate with light. Painted late in his life, the piece shows how Signac moved away from strict scientific color rules toward a looser, more joyful expression of the city's atmosphere over the Seine.
