マルセイユ
ca 1920
Usually the king of tiny, meticulous dots, Paul Signac lets his hair down here with a breezy watercolor sketch of the Marseille harbor. You can almost feel the sea breeze ruffling the rigging of those tall sailing ships, their blue masts reaching up like a forest of sticks. In the background, the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica watches over the port, rendered in soft washes of pink and white. It feels less like a finished masterpiece and more like a snapshot from a sailor's logbook—quick, energetic, and full of salt air.
