Saint-Tropez, The Port
1894
Paul Signac captured the bustling harbor of Saint-Tropez in 1894, long before it became a glamorous playground for the rich and famous. In fact, Signac is partly responsible for putting this quiet fishing village on the map! Notice the loose, sketchy ink lines and splashes of vibrant watercolor—this isn't his famous dotted pointillism style, but a quick, energetic study of daily life by the docks. The bright orange and blue sail dominates the scene, showing how he used bold color to guide the eye even in a simple drawing.
