Twee varkens in een hok
1649
Paulus Potter, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, decided that pigs deserved the same dignified treatment as royalty in this charming 1649 scene. Instead of a grand landscape, he zooms in on two hairy swine lounging in a dark, wooden sty, capturing their coarse fur and sleepy expressions with incredible, almost tactile detail. It’s a perfect example of Baroque realism, proving that even the muddiest farm animals could be high art if painted with enough love and skill. You can almost smell the straw and hear them snoring!
