Cupid Supplicating Jupiter
ca. 1611-15
Here we see the King of the Gods, Jupiter, looking rather stern as a winged Cupid tugs at his bow, seemingly pleading for help. Painted by the Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens around 1611, this scene captures a mythological moment where Cupid complains that his love arrows aren't working on stubborn targets like the goddess Diana. The massive eagle in the foreground—Jupiter's faithful companion—adds a dramatic, almost intimidating presence to this divine family dispute. Rubens' signature style is on full display with the muscular figures and that vibrant, sweeping red cloth.
