The Straw Hat
1622-25
Rubens painted his sister-in-law, Susanna Lunden, sporting a spectacular, oversized black hat adorned with fluffy feathers—though the masterpiece is famously (and confusingly) titled 'The Straw Hat.' Her flushed cheeks and direct, confident gaze capture the vibrant energy of the Baroque era, while her plunging neckline and rich red sleeves show off the artist's incredible mastery of light and texture. Despite the title, she is definitely not wearing straw, making this one of art history's most fashionable misnomers!
