冷たいヴィーナス
1614
Rubens illustrates the old proverb 'Without food and wine, love freezes' in this surprisingly chilly scene. Venus sits huddled in a rocky landscape, looking far from amorous, while a little Cupid crouches beside her, shivering and miserable. Behind them, a satyr offers a basket of fruit and grapes, trying to tempt her with the very things she needs to warm up her cold heart. It's a playful Baroque take on mythology, showcasing Rubens' talent for painting fleshy, realistic human forms even when they're suffering from a mythological cold snap.
