ca. 1840
Peter von Cornelius, a key figure in the German Romanticism movement (specifically the Nazarenes who lived like monks to revive spiritual art), crafted this towering vision of the apocalypse around 1840. At the very top, Christ sits in serene majesty surrounded by saints, while below, a chaotic swirl of trumpeting angels and resurrected souls fills the sky. The scene dramatically splits between heavenly order and earthly turmoil, with figures clawing their way out of graves in a mix of hope and terror. Originally designed as a monumental fresco for the Ludwigskirche in Munich, this piece reflects the artist's obsession with reviving the spiritual intensity of early Renaissance masters like Michelangelo.
