Klaproos

Philipp Otto Runge

Klaproos by Philipp Otto Runge

Philipp Otto Runge, a star of German Romanticism, stripped the poppy down to its ghostly essence here. Against a void of deep black, the stark white silhouette of the flower, bud, and seed pod dances upward with elegant, curving stems. Runge believed nature was a direct reflection of the divine and even corresponded with Goethe about color theory (though they disagreed on almost everything!). It’s a hauntingly simple image from an artist who died at just 33, capturing the lifecycle of a plant from bloom to seed in a single, bold stroke.
