Maréchal-ferrant ferrant un cheval
c. 1652 - c. 1655
Philips Wouwerman was absolutely obsessed with painting horses—he included them in almost every single one of his works! In this bustling scene, a white horse takes center stage while a blacksmith gets to work, surrounded by travelers taking a break near a rickety wooden bridge. The dramatic, cloudy sky and the ruined building on the hill give the scene a moody, atmospheric feel typical of the Dutch Golden Age. Wouwerman was so prolific that over 800 paintings are attributed to him, and he rarely signed them, making art historians' jobs a bit of a detective game!
