Halt of Travellers
Philips Wouwerman was absolutely obsessed with horses, featuring them in over 500 of his works, and this moody Baroque landscape shows exactly why. Under a dramatic, stormy sky, a weary traveler takes a break on the ground next to a striking white horse draped in a red blanket, while a gnarled, leafless tree twists dramatically into the air. As a master of the Dutch Golden Age, Wouwerman was famous for capturing these quiet, everyday moments of travel and rest in the rugged countryside. Art historians note that he almost always included a white horse in his paintings, making it his signature trademark!
