Riders and horses resting by a river by Philips Wouwerman

Philips Wouwerman was a Dutch Golden Age painter absolutely obsessed with horses, reportedly painting over a thousand of them during his short life! In this lively Baroque scene, a group of travelers pauses by a river, their mounts taking a well-deserved drink. Notice the striking white horse in the center—it's a classic Wouwerman signature, as he almost always included a white or grey horse in his compositions. The expansive, cloud-filled sky and rustic ruins add a touch of grand drama to what is essentially a very ordinary moment of rest on the road.
