鷹狩り
c. 1658 - c. 1660
Philips Wouwerman was absolutely obsessed with horses, painting over 2,000 of them during his career, and you can see why in this dramatic Baroque scene. Under a massive, swirling sky that takes up most of the canvas, a group of elegantly dressed riders on horseback gathers in a rugged landscape, likely preparing for the falcon hunt mentioned in the title. Wouwerman was a master of the Dutch Golden Age, and he had a signature trick: he almost always included a white horse in his compositions, which you can spot right here among the riders. It’s a perfect snapshot of 17th-century leisure, capturing the excitement of the hunt before the action even really starts.
