De terugkeer van de jacht
ca. 1494-1500
Piero di Cosimo transports us to a wild, mythological shoreline where satyrs and centaurs are bustling with chaotic energy. In the foreground, a satyr wrestles a wild boar while a centaur carries a woman away, and in the background, figures unload a boat amidst a dramatic, cloudy sky. This scene depicts a primitive age of humanity, full of raw nature, which was a favorite theme for this eccentric artist. Piero was known as a bit of a weirdo in Renaissance Florence—he reportedly lived in squalor and ate 50 hard-boiled eggs at a time—so his imaginative, almost surreal take on mythology fits his personality perfectly.
