De storm
1880
Two young lovers sprint barefoot through a dark, tempestuous landscape, their bodies pressed close as they seek shelter from a sudden downpour. The young man bravely holds a billowing golden cloak above them like a makeshift tent, while his companion clings to him, her sheer white dress clinging to her form in the wind. Painted by French academic artist Pierre-Auguste Cot in 1880, this dramatic scene captures a fleeting moment of youthful passion and vulnerability against the raw power of nature. It remains one of the most beloved romantic paintings of the 19th century, currently hanging in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
