The Three Graces
1503 - 1508
Raphael painted these three pale, elegant women when he was barely out of his teens, capturing the essence of the Three Graces from Greek mythology. These goddesses of charm, beauty, and creativity stand in a serene landscape, with the central figure turning her back in a pose borrowed directly from ancient Roman sculpture. Instead of the traditional hand-holding dance, they clutch mysterious golden spheres, adding a touch of enigmatic symbolism to the scene. This small masterpiece, created around 1504, shows the young artist already obsessed with classical harmony and perfect proportion, blending soft Umbrian colors with a new, sculptural solidity.
