Woman with a Veil by Raphael, 1512 - 1515

Raphael’s 'Woman with a Veil' (also known as La Velata) is a stunning portrait of a woman draped in a flowing, translucent veil that cascades over her shoulders. Painted around 1512-1515, she is believed to be the artist's mistress, Margherita Luti, a baker's daughter from Rome. Her direct, serene gaze and the incredibly realistic rendering of the silk sleeves and golden necklace showcase Raphael's mastery of texture and light during the High Renaissance. Legend has it that Raphael was so captivated by her beauty that he kept this portrait in his studio until his death, refusing to sell it.
