The Night Watch

The Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn, 1 January 1642

Rembrandt completely broke the rules of group portraits with this chaotic, action-packed scene of a militia company marching out. Instead of lining everyone up like a school photo, he created a swirling mess of muskets, drums, and shouting men, all illuminated by his signature dramatic lighting. You might notice a glowing girl in the background holding a dead chicken—she's actually the group's mascot, with the chicken's claws representing their guild. Ironically, despite being called 'The Night Watch,' it was originally painted as a daytime scene that just got really dark over the centuries due to dirty varnish.
