In the Meadow
Rosa Bonheur was the rockstar of 19th-century animal painting, and this peaceful meadow scene shows exactly why. A young shepherd boy on horseback keeps a watchful eye over a mixed group of cows and sheep lounging in the grass under a dramatic sky. Bonheur was a pioneer of Realism who actually got a police permit to wear men's pants so she could hang out at horse markets and slaughterhouses to study anatomy! That dedication shows in the incredibly lifelike muscles of the horse and the relaxed, heavy look of the resting cattle.
