Zelfportret als ’’Winter’’ by Rosalba Carriera, 1730

Rosalba Carriera, a Venetian powerhouse of the Rococo era, painted herself here as the embodiment of Winter, complete with a fluffy white fur collar and powdered hair that mimics freshly fallen snow. She was a trailblazer who helped popularize pastel portraiture across Europe, charming royalty and nobles with her soft, luminous style. Notice the striking blue cap and pearl earrings; they add a pop of color against the frosty white palette, showing off her mastery of texture and light. Despite losing her eyesight later in life, Carriera remained one of the most successful and celebrated female artists of the 18th century.
