Leda and the Swan
Théodore Géricault brings a raw, muscular energy to this classic myth of Zeus seducing Leda in the form of a swan. Unlike the polite, polished versions you might see from other eras, this feels almost wild and untamed, with the massive bird wrapping its wings protectively—and possessively—around the reclining figure. Géricault, who died tragically young at 32 but is best known for the dramatic 'Raft of the Medusa,' was a master of capturing intense emotion, and you can see that signature intensity here in the bold, sweeping brushstrokes. It’s a perfect example of Romanticism, where feeling and drama took center stage over perfect, calm composition.
