Le Chasseur chargeant
1812
Géricault burst onto the Paris art scene in 1812 with this explosive depiction of a Napoleonic cavalry officer sitting atop a wildly rearing white horse. Notice the luxurious leopard-skin saddle cloth and towering fur hat as the soldier draws his saber against a backdrop of smoke and chaos. Unlike the stiff, heroic portraits of the time, Géricault captured the raw, terrifying energy of war, with the horse's eyes wide in panic. It's a perfect example of Romanticism, prioritizing raw emotion and frantic movement over calm rationality.
