Rievaulx Abbey, Yorkshire
ca. 1796
Thomas Girtin captures the haunting beauty of these abbey ruins nestled in a Yorkshire valley, using soft watercolor washes to create a moody, atmospheric sky. As a close friend and rival of J.M.W. Turner, Girtin was a master of the Romantic style, finding poetry in decay and nature—the two even started their careers coloring prints together! The stark white walls of the abbey contrast sharply with the dark, rolling hills, suggesting a scene frozen in time. Turner later admitted that if Girtin hadn't died at age 27, he (Turner) might have 'starved' from the competition.
