Fire in the Lamp Stand
1878
This 1878 ukiyo-e print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts Yanagihara Aiko, a high-ranking court lady, tenderly tending to a large lantern. As one of the last great masters of the woodblock print tradition, Yoshitoshi masterfully contrasts the bold, structural reds of the lantern and hanging curtains against the delicate floral patterns of her kimono. The piece comes from a series celebrating 'beautiful women,' capturing a quiet, intimate moment of daily life with dramatic flair. It's a perfect example of how traditional Japanese art was evolving during the rapidly modernizing Meiji era.
